Deep Cleaning vs. Standard Cleaning: Which One Does Your Home or Unit Need?
Every cleaning company advertises "deep cleaning." Very few define it. The result is that homeowners pay for a deep clean and get a thorough standard clean, and property managers order a turnover clean and get something in between. Here is a clear definition of each — the one Movara's residential and turnover crews work to.
Standard cleaning: maintenance
A standard (or recurring) clean keeps a lived-in home presentable. Typically:
- Dusting reachable surfaces
- Vacuuming and mopping open floor areas
- Kitchen counters, sink, exterior of appliances, stovetop
- Bathrooms: toilets, sinks, tubs/showers, mirrors
- Trash removed, beds made if requested
It is fast and repeatable. It does not reach what a home accumulates over months.
Deep cleaning: the reset
A deep clean addresses everything a standard clean skips. On a Movara deep clean the checklist includes:
Kitchen — inside and behind appliances where movable; oven and range hood degreasing; inside cabinets and drawers (emptied); backsplash and grout; under the sink.
Bathrooms — grout and caulk scrubbing; mineral and soap-scum removal from glass and fixtures; exhaust fan covers; inside vanities; baseboards and door frames.
Whole home — baseboards, door frames and trim; light switches and outlet covers; window sills and tracks; interior windows and glass doors; ceiling fans and light fixtures; vents and returns; behind and under furniture where movable; closet floors and shelving.
Floors — edge-to-edge detail vacuuming; hard floors scrubbed rather than damp-mopped; carpet extraction (hot-water extraction to the IICRC S100 standard) as an add-on or included on turnovers.
A deep clean takes two to four times longer than a standard clean of the same space.
Move-in / move-out and turnover cleaning
A move-out clean is a deep clean of an empty unit with one extra requirement: it has to pass an inspection. For rental turnovers Movara runs a fixed pipeline — vacated → inspected → assigned → cleaned → repaired → QC + photos → ready — because a unit that "looks clean" but fails the walkthrough costs another vacant day.
Turnover cleans add:
- Inside all appliances, including refrigerator coils and drip pans where accessible
- Wall spot-cleaning and scuff removal (paint-ready prep)
- Blinds, tracks and sliding-door channels
- Odor assessment — smoke, pets, cooking — and source treatment, not masking
- Photo documentation of every room at completion
When to choose which
| Situation | Recommendation | |---|---| | Weekly or biweekly upkeep | Standard clean | | First visit before starting recurring service | Deep clean, then standard | | Seasonal reset, after illness, after renovation | Deep clean | | Selling, listing, or hosting | Deep clean | | Tenant moved out | Turnover / move-out clean | | Post-construction dust | Post-construction clean (a specialized deep clean) | | After a water or smoke event | Restoration cleaning — different chemistry and safety protocols |
What to look for in a deep-cleaning company
- A written checklist you can see before the job
- Trained technicians who know which chemistry is safe on stone, wood, grout and stainless
- Photo documentation at completion
- Insurance and a real point of contact
- Honesty about what is not included — deep cleaning is not restoration, and stained grout may need restoration, not scrubbing
